“Playstation Network is currently undergoing maintenance.” That is what Los Angeles area Playstation 3owners are looking at today. Sony remains tight lipped much to the dismay of Free Realms players and those that bought the newly released Portal 2 , Mortal Kombat and SOCOM this week. In the short term, it appears Sony is happy to have the group Anonymous take the blame. The Operation Sony Facebook page and AnonNews.org website is quickly being filled with the angry comments of Playstation 3 Owners. Today marks the third day that the Network has been down and the officialPlaystation Twitter feed repeatedly promises to keep people updated in between unrelated gaming posts. Meanwhile, Anonymous has posted a press statement denying that “Anon Ops” has anything to do with it.
Going forward it seems that Sony is going to have a lot of explaining to do. The longer this outage lasts, the more public sentiment will move against them for a perceived incompetence, at not being able to resolve the issue for their customers. Over the past few years, they have had a difficult time communicating in a way that is not easily taken as arrogant. Their response to this latest issue, at the least seems apathetic. It will take a significant response on Sony’s part to demonstrate they don’t take their customers for granted. Both Amazon and Reddit, the news recommendation service, are also experiencing difficulties, with the later almost entirely not functional. It is yet to be seen if the issues with Amazon and Sony are related and may have an impact on the current swoon with Cloud computing.
