On Oct. 24, 2013 Kalypso Media took some time to show off their upcoming game, “The Dark Eye: Demonicon,” a day before its North American release date of Oct. 25, 2013, with a live webcast. The webcast featured an actual playthrough and narration by Project Manager Johannes Bickle and Executive Producer Marc Buro of developer Noumena Studios. Kalypso did show the game at the 2012 E3 Expo in Los Angeles to media only, but the action RPG based on the European pen and paper system of the same name, was absent from the 2013 Expo. While PC gamers can start playing this game tomorrow, console gamers will have to wait until sometime next year.
The presentation began with the intro movie which was full of epic battles and sorcery, which is standard fantasy fare. What was surprising is that when the game began, all of the stunning imagery continued, particularly in the environments and creature design. Of course a good RPG isn’t all about how it looks, but everything else that lets you role play. While, the narrative is dense and the game is not a sandbox type affair like the “Elder Scrolls” series, there are quite a few choices to make. Because of the specific story told in “Demonicon” there is also no ability to customize your character’s appearance other than with clothing and armor.
“Demonicon” does borrow quite a bit from other RPG’s like “Mass Effect” and “The Witcher” but it also borrows mechanics from action games like “Far Cry 3.” The action heavy combat system does offer controller support on the PC also. “The Dark Eye: Demonicon” is available on PC Oct. 25, 2013 and will be out on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3 sometime in 2014.
