Exclusive downloadable content for Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII-2 and prolouge

Los Angeles offices of Square Enix have announced that a new piece of content has been added to the downloadable content list for Final Fantasy XIII-2.  The new DLC, a bow weapon for Serah called Azrael, has been created, through collaboration between Square Enix and Microsoft, and will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360, at launch, on Jan. 31, 2012.

For those looking for some insight into where Final Fantasy XIII-2 picks up, Square Enix has also released a prologue for the upcoming game.

She defied her destiny. She set out to vanquish the false gods enslaving mankind.
After the war, the world was no longer the same. Humans reigned victorious and their gods were no more. Their utopia fell from the sky and became one with Pulse, the underworld crawling with beasts and fiends. It marked the beginning of a new era.
However, she was nowhere to be seen. Everyone believed she was gone—with the exception of one, her sister, Serah.
Three years later—
A meteorite disrupts the serenity of a peaceful village. Time is distorted; bloodthirsty monsters are released within the confines of the secluded town.
Amidst the chaos, Serah is saved by a stranger who goes by the name of Noel. A hunter from the future, he bears an important message.
“She is waiting for you,” he says. “Come with me if you want to see her again.”
She is Lightning—protector of the goddess who rules the realm of death and chaos, the one–and–only sister of Serah.
“I need to see her. I need to see my sister.” Her heart brimming with hope, a determined Serah sets off on an adventure to reunite with her sister, her family, her world.

Azrael is named after an angel who represents spirits and death. It is believed to possess the power to change the owner’s destiny, and the player’s Chain Bonus will also be upgraded when equipped.  Only Serah has the ability to wield this legendary weapon.  Players can purchase this weapon from Chocolina, the merchant in Episode 2 or in the main game for 80 Microsoft Points via the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for Xbox 360.

Most Final Fantasy XIII players picked up the top selling game on the Playstation 3 for a number of reasons.  The Xbox 360 version suffered from technical inferiorities (lower maximum resolution) to the Playstation version.  The Xbox version also required multiple discs.  Since then, the Xbox 360 has been updated to use a new higher capacity DVD disc.  Microsoft is counting on exclusive content to even the playing field a bit with the highly anticipated sequel.
