Kinect: Disneyland Adventures previewed

Last weekend, just a few miles south of downtown Los Angeles, Disney held the annual D23 Expo.  It’s like Comic Con but all Disney stuff.  You’d be surprised at how much Disney stuff out there, there really is and good luck to those of you that would want to take your family to the expo at the convention center and not fork out the extra money to stop at Disneyland, next door.  There is some hope for you though.  Microsoft is making a virtual Disneyland game that utilizes the Kinect.  For less than the price of a child’s ticket, Kinect: Disneyland Adventures will be available in North America on November 15th, 2011.

Kinect: Disneyland Adventures will let you explore the Disneyland park — from Main Street U.S.A. to Tomorrowland.  You can join Peter Pan to battle Captain Hook, high-five Mickey Mouse or hug Snow White, get autographs and accept quests from the fully and authentically voiced characters.  You can also share/mimic a unique little dance with characters you meet in the park.

Whether you want to go on an adventure in your favorite attraction or explore the entire park, Kinect: Disneyland Adventures will allow you to play and customize your own Disneyland park.   You can partner with a friend to explore the Disneyland park and have him or her jump in to lend a hand on difficult challenges and help you earn rewards.

Kinect: Disneyland Adventures is designed to adjust its difficulty based on skill and allows everyone to experience their favorite Disneyland park attractions as immersive adventures.  You can explore Neverland at Peter Pan’s side, take up your sword to fight Captain Hook, battle your way to the island in Pirates of the Caribbean or enjoy the fascinating world of Alice in Wonderland.  Though the game is not quite finished, it is already a remarkable experience.

The free roaming Disneyland experience is navigated by holding out your arm as if you were pointing to the direction you wanted to go.  You can also put your arms down to stop and lean to look around.  While it might take a couple of minutes to get used to moving around, within a couple minutes, I was able to maneuver around and through the most narrow areas of New Orleans Square.  It’s nice to see an adventure game utilizing the Kinect so well.  It truly makes you wonder why there aren’t more core games that utilize the Xbox’s Kinect system.  Hopefully, after November 15th some more minds will be opened up to the possibilities.
